A freshly cut tree drinks a surprising amount of water. Get it into a stand quickly, keep it topped up and away from radiators and other sources of heat and it will look its best for weeks.
1
Before use, keep outside in a cool, shaded place until required indoors.
2
Within one hour of taking indoors, cut the bottom 2cm off the trunk.
3
Place in a water-holding stand and position the tree in the room away from direct sources of heat.
4
Top up with water every day – you will be surprised how much water it needs.
Your potted tree is not guaranteed to grow, but following these instructions may help. Our experience is that they have around a 50/50 chance of survival.
Indoors over Christmas
Acclimatise it gently both before and after Christmas.
1
Before taking from the cold outdoors to warm indoors, place in a shed or similar for 24–48 hours.
2
When taking indoors, place on a watering tray away from direct sources of heat.
3
Water the tree as you would any other indoor plant.
4
Before taking from the warm indoors to cold outdoors, place in a shed or similar for 24–48 hours.
Planting out afterwards
Give it a permanent home in the garden.
1
Plant out when the soil temperature is below 4°C (usually November – March).
2
When selecting a location, remember that the tree can grow over 50ft tall.
3
Ensure soil is tightly packed around the roots so there are no air pockets.
4
Keep the tree watered through dry spells as it establishes itself.
